General Ice Diving Discussions

Ice Diving Adventure

January 2001 Ice Diving Adventure:

I will have my new red Dive Cayman Islands hat on, see you at the airport at the rental car counters which is next to the luggage pickup.

We are planning on Pizza at my place (anything special you like?), after you check in at the hotel and follow me to my place.

Hotel is near the airport so there should not a problem getting back to the airport, unless it snows on Monday am. Then it gets slippery.

Additional Ice Diving Information

Bring a topside camera, the 2 hour drive up to McCall is very scenic.

Weather is 8 degrees in McCall at 10:50 pm tonight. Bring warm clothes.

lists the current weather

see you all friday night

Start about 7 pm in Boise, and if you are lucky, we supplied pizza while I lectured, so if you could get to Boise about 6 or before, that works.

Please let me know your itinerary so I can meet you.

If you get me a credit card number i can use it to make your hotel reservations in Boise.

You will need a room in Boise on friday night, you will need to rent a car from the airport to hotel to lecture site to motel.

Then to McCall on Saturday am to dive site to hotel to dinner in McCall

(I have a room for you on Saturday night) then to dive site then to Boise then to motel then to airport on Monday am.

You will need a room on Sunday night fly out Monday am.

We will be diving fairly shallow and fairly early on Sunday so a morning flight is fine.

let me know, looking forward to it.

Ice Thickness Report

Cathy and Kelly Felin wrote:

Dear Phil, FYI we were at Cascade Lake on December 29, 2000. The ice was about 10" thick at the golf course boat ramp. We went to Payette Lake on New Years day, with about 8" of ice at Pilgrim Cove. We fished about 60 yards out from shore. The north end of the lake still had open water but I would think that Mill Park is about the same as Pilgram Cove. We hope to fish it again in a week or so, will keep you posted, Cath and I are not tough enough to ice dive. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Kelly and Cathy

Another Ice Thickness Report

Well, I did some calling around to get an update on the thickness of the ice on Payette Lake and I got some conflicting info...

Here's the scoop..

US Forest Service office 208-634-0700

Said they'd been an article in the paper about people skating across the lake but that there is also a recommendation to stay off the ice as it's supposedly not thick enough.

Fire Department non-emergency 208-634-7070

Said they're recommending people stay off the ice now as there's new snow on it which makes it start melting from the bottom up. I wonder why??

Police Department non-emergency 208-634-7144

(note they said the lake was out of their jurisdiction) and told me to call the Idaho Fish and Game.

Idaho Fish and Game 208-634-8137

Receptionist said they usually ask someone in the Fisheries dept this question but no one was answering back there when I called... Receptionist said she knew people were ice fishing on it now, but wasn't sure of the thickness.

Why would having fresh snow on top of the ice make it start melting from the bottom up? Because of the insolation quality of the snow. Remind me to ask you another question about ice forming on a lake too...

Ice Diving Feb 23 - 24 - 25, 2001

We are going Ice Diving Feb 23 - 24 - 25, 2001, at Payette Lake, McCall, Idaho and we would like for you to join us.

Lecture is Friday evening, from 7 pm - 9 pm, Feb 23th in Boise at Omni Divers.

Text cost is $35.00 plus tax and Instruction fees are $250.00 and certification fees are $25.00 plus tax.

Then, Feb 24th, we drive north to Payette Lake, McCall, Idaho. We cut the hole then dive, twice. Then off to dinner at the Micro place in McCall, then to the motel and get a rest.

Then up on Feb 25st, for the third required and fourth optional dives. We then clean up the ice and hole and head to back to Boise. We should be back about 5 - 6 pm, roads and weather permitting.

RSVP, so I can make motel reservations, get a head count and check to see if we have enough snow shovels.

LETS GO ICE DIVING!

As in the past we need help, so any certified ice divers who would like to attend and provide some surface or in water support, it will be greatly appreciated.

Phil Graf

P.S. We are doing this again on March 16 - 18, 2001, join us for the cool fun.
