Project Dive Exploration, Get Involved!
GET INVOLVED IN DIVE SAFETY RESEARCH
Your new dive computer, the Cochran Commander Nitrox, can help to improve the safety and efficiency of recreational diving by allowing you to participate in
PROJECT DIVE EXPLORATION.
PROJECT DIVE EXPLORATION was designed by the Divers Alert Network (DAN) and is supported by the
manufacturer of your dive computer. Its purpose is to establish a unique database of dive profiles from real dives and to
compile information on the behavior and health of recreational divers. The collected data will be a resource for diving safety
research including the study of dive styles, decompression practices, and the effects of individual characteristics such as age,
sex, weight, and medical history. The ultimate goal of PROJECT DIVE EXPLORATION is to make your dives more
efficient and pleasant.
PROJECT DIVE EXPLORATION has multiple objectives:
Collecting real-time depth/time profiles for analysis;
Documenting the condition of the diver 48 hours after the end of the dive series;
Documenting any health changes in the diver, whether or not related to diving;
Investigating the relationship between diving and health effects by using statistical analysis;
Developing flexible, low-risk decompression procedures for multi-level/multi-day repetitive diving;
Studying the effects of flying after diving.
WHAT YOUR COMPUTER CAN DO
In addition to tracking time and depth and providing guidelines for the execution of your dives, your new dive computer
precisely records your depth-time profile. These can be transferred to a personal computer and e-mailed to DAN for analysis
in the PROJECT DIVE EXPLORATION database.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
You provide additional information about yourself including:
Age, sex, height, weight, diving experience, and medical history
Dive equipment and environment
Technical problems, mishaps, and symptoms.
All data you provide are handled as Confidential Medical Information.
HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE
Visit the DAN Web Site
http://www.diversalertnetwork.orgto
get more information about PROJECT DIVE EXPLORATION and other DAN research projects.
You can donate your dive profiles during DAN sponsored events and trips.
You can sign-up for a free Field Research Coordinator (FRC) course and learn how to collect data.
You can download an online FRC Course and Manual to learn data collection procedures.
WHY YOU SHOULD PARTICIPATE
Your dive computer is a powerful tool that lets you take part in a research study that will benefit divers all over the world.
Beginning in January 2000, DAN will publish an Annual Diving Report that summarizes the PROJECT DIVE
EXPLORATION data collected to date. For those who learn to be FRCs, DAN will provide software tools to enable them to
collect their own data and conduct their own research projects.
Enjoy your dives and deposit your dive data with DAN in the PROJECT DIVE EXPLORATION database.
