There are several branches of professional diving, the best known of which is probably commercial diving. Any person wishing to become a professional diver must undergo specific training; due to the demanding nature and danger of some professional diving disciplines, specialized equipment is often required or demanded by law, normally diver to surface communications systems. Such environments may include fresh and saltwater caves and the interior of shipwrecks. In many cases, technical dives also include planned decompression carried out over a number of stages during a controlled ascent to the surface at the end of the dive. The depth-based definition is derived from the fact that breathing regular air while experiencing pressures greater than those at 100 feet or deeper causes a progressively increasing amount of impairment due to nitrogen narcosis. Increasing pressures at depth also increase the risk of oxygen toxicity in oxygen-rich breathing gasses. For this reason technical diving often includes the use of breathing mixtures other than air. These factors increase the level of risk and training required for technical diving far beyond that required for recreational diving. This is a fairly conservative definition of technical diving. Scuba Diving is an underwater sport whereby one uses self-contained breathing equipment to navigate or work underwater for periods of time greater than a person could hold their own breath. The term 'Scuba' is actually the acronym 'S.C.U.B.A.' which stands for Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. In common usage 'Scuba' generally is used to refer to open-circuit diving equipment in which gas (usually air) is breathed from a tank of compressed gas and then exhaled into the water. Less commonly, some divers will use equipment known as 'rebreathers'. Generally, when scuba diving the diver carries all of the equipment necessary and is not be reliant upon equipment elsewhere (e.g. on the surface) to supply breathing gas or other support during the dive. The diver swims underwater using fins attached to the feet and wears a dive suit. Some divers also move around with the assistance of a DPV (Diver Propulsion Vehicle), commonly referred to as a "scooter", or by using surface-tethered devices called sleds, which are pulled by a boat. Diving is generally sub-categorized as either Recreational Scuba Diving or Professional Scuba Diving.
